In 2010, Strikes Against Cancer was the idea of 11-year-old, Geordon Cox. His Mom is fighting endometrial and cervical cancer for the third time in three years. Geordon is no stranger to cancer. His Godmother, Debbie Wright, Grandmother, Marcia and Grandfather "Popie" are winning their fight against cancer. However, he lost his Grandmother, Rosemary Cox and Aunt, Patricia Netzer to another variation of this terrible disease. Rather than just get mad, Geordon decided to fight like his mother and give a Christmas gift that would last forever. He approached his dad and asked how he could use their shared love of baseball and his passion for pitching to Honor his Mother and raise money and awareness to fight cancer. Since his Mom loves to watch him pitch, they came up with the idea to have friends and family members pledge money for every strike he throws during the 2011 season. When his coach and teammates of the McKinney Mongrels found out they wanted to help too. Coach Phil Taylor lost his mother to breast cancer three years ago. One of our team moms is a cancer survivor. This led to their decision to collectively join the fight with Geordon. So, Strikes Against Cancer was born.
Geordon’s friend Brenden Bishop along with professional photographer Uncle Donnie helped with the photo shoot to get a website set up for www.strikesagainstcancer.org. Now friends and family can go online and pledge anywhere from a penny per strike to a dollar for every strike thrown in the 2011 season. You also have the option to pledge a specified amounts, or many teams pledge over a month period, to individual pitchers helping raise money to fight cancer. All proceeds will go to benefit the V Foundation on behalf of Geordon’s mission, Strikes Against Cancer. Strikes Against Cancer is a 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
Geordon's Accountability And Support - Olympic Gold Medalist helps Geordon Strike Gold!
Going into the 2012 season Geordon's off-season workout evolved to refine mechanics and strength with the second year of Strikes Against Cancer. Geordon gets his picture taken with Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Johnson at the MJP center in McKinney, Texas. (Michael won 4 Olympic Gold Medals and 8 World Championship Gold Medals). The MJP training staff has been helping Geordon with his biomechanics, strength, agility and conditioning for the upcoming year of pitching. All of the balance, form, proper running techniques, concentration on his core and hip injury are instilled in his 3 day-a-week training program which transcends down to his pitching mechanics.
Seen here, Geordon was telling Michael that he was doing a report on him for school on his first autobiography "Slaying the Dragon". Michael then mentioned that his new book "Gold Rush" is just hitting the stands in the U.S. but has been in the circulation in the U.K. and other international markets for the past year.
Others have contributed to Geordon and his desired of success with Strikes Against Cancer. Seen here with Skip Johnson (University of Texas Pitching Coach), Steve Foster (Kansas City Royals Pitching Coach), and his pitching instructor Ross Powell at an off-season pitching clinic held at the Triple Creek Academy. After every workout or training session Geordon has a dedication to his mother daily fight, "Mom's cancer does not take a day off".
A Major Leaguer Giving to Geordon's Mission
The Triple Creek Academy, owned by ex-Major League Pitcher Ross Powell, is the home of Geordon’s McKinney Mongrels practice facility. In hearing Geordon’s gift to his mother, Ross offered pitching lessons for free to ensure his success as a pitcher and host the “Strikes Against Cancer” tournament to support Geordon’s cause. “Give him to me. Let me be his instructor so he can glorify his mother”, said Ross Powell owner of TCA. Ross broke into the Majors with the Cincinnati Reds. Ironically, the Reds happen to be in the Cox family history since 1921 starting with Geordon’s Great-Grandfather George Cox. For the first time in USSSA history, two USSSA facility coordinators have come together to grow the Strikes Against Cancer Benefit Tournament. Ross Powell of TCA and Perry Hollaway of Texas Tournament Baseball have come together as a USSSA a family to ensure the continuing success and growth. In this commitment the Board of Directors, Ross and Perry anticipate the Strikes Against Cancer Tournament to be the second largest tourney in the Southwest by 2013 and potentially the largest in the South in four years.
