|The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition The mission of the NOCC is to save lives by fighting tirelessly to prevent and cure ovarian cancer and to improve the quality of life for Survivors.
More than 22,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, and over 14,000 women die from the disease. Unfortunately, most cases are diagnosed in later stages, when the prognosis is poor. However, if diagnosed and treated early, when the cancer is confined to the ovary, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. That is why it is imperative that the early signs and symptoms of the disease are recognized, not only by women, but by their families and the healthcare community.
|The American Cancer Society – Information and Resources for all forms of Cancer: Cervical Breast, Colon, Prostate, Lung, and Other Forms.Cancer causes 1 in 8 deaths worldwide and is rapidly becoming a global pandemic. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, there were 12.7 million new cancer cases in 2008. If rates don’t change, the global cancer burden is expected to nearly double to 21.4 million cases and 13.5 million deaths by 2030. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the toll of cancer and other chronic diseases is greater in low- and middle-income countries where people develop chronic diseases “at younger ages, suffer longer – often with preventable complications – and die sooner than those in high-income countries.” The economic toll is equally alarming; in 2008, cancer accounted for nearly $1 trillion in economic losses from premature death and disability.American Cancer Society “The Official Sponsor of Birthdays” www.cancer.org|
